We are pleased to present the winners of the POLIS/ITLR Fieldwork Photography Competition. This week's photo by Halimatou Hima Moussa Dioula, a PhD candidate at the Centre for Development Studies, won third prize in the competition.
In Kadata, a village in Maradi, Niger, a girl succeeding past the 6th grade is rare. These girls are here, learning, ilimi Haske. ilimi Haske means 'knowledge is light' in Hausa.
I took this photo as part of my PhD fieldwork in Niger, which has one of the lowest rates of girls' education in the world. My PhD aims to shed light on how we could change this for the better.
